Included are a brief history of Somali and Lewiston, which helps to explain the animosity that exists between some of those belonging to each culture. There are also commentaries and diverse opinions regarding the changes that have taken place in Lewiston.

  2. This is a great video it tells alot in a short period of time. I think that what all people want is to provide a better life for the next generation. There was a comment made to the former governer of Lewiston when asked "why move to Lewistion Maine in the middle of winter its horrible and cold and just plain miserable" the response I thought was quite powerful the gentelman responded by saying that from where i was comming from this is heaven!" When you see what war does to a country, community and persons it isn't hard to understnad why you would want to get out and start over some where new and its just sad that people can't just let other human beings do better for theemselves and their families.

  3. I did not look ahead to see what the instructor was going to post. I had this planned for weeks waiting for my turn. I really liked this video and the diverse opinions it represents.

  4. Debbie, I think your post is great. I planned mine for weeks too and the further we get into the semester the harder it is to find relevant and good material. I think this is a perfect post and people can add to it what they do not add to the blog.
Laine, I think your point is a good one, what is a little snow, compared to watching your country and your loved ones tortured and killed?

  5. I still feel like this was a really good idea to post under the Somali population because these are important issues, issues that are closer to us demographically. Some of the people in Lewiston need to start becoming more open to their new neighbors, and become more understanding rather then gaining more hate.

  6. I guess I had more to say about the Somali community in Lewiston. Prior to getting injured, I worked at BIW. I can still recall a number of comments that were unfortunately made. One of the big rumors going around was that a Somali man had posted on the back of his car,” you paid for this.” and the workers that were living in the Lewiston area believed this to be fact. I would ask them if they saw it and most of them replied no, but they always had a cousin or friend who had seen it. There were a lot of comments like this flying around the yard and in certain circumstances I didn't have the courage to speak up and I still find that troubling. Hopefully after viewing this documentary and obtaining the education and then confidence, there will be fewer and fewer of those certain circumstances.

  7. Dave, thank you for sharing such a personal story. I can relate to not standing up when I didn't know better. One of my favorite quotes is by Maya Angelou who said "when I knew better I did better." Who can't relate to that?
    Also, what a terrible rumor!
